【On April 16, “Kumamoto Earthquake Day,” reconfirm daily preparedness at home!-Shisei Dayori.April (1)】

Kumamoto City has designated April 16 as “Kumamoto Earthquake Day” in order to pass on the lessons learned from the 2008 Kumamoto Earthquake to the next generation and to deepen interest in and understanding of disaster prevention.

Why don't you take this opportunity to check your daily preparedness?

〇  Are you prepared with stockpiles?

Daily stockpiling, in which you purchase a little extra of the food and daily necessities you use on a regular basis, is an easy and waste-free way to stockpile supplies.

〇Do you have an emergency bag prepared?

When a disaster strikes, it is not always possible to immediately determine what and how much to evacuate with in an "emergency. Prepare a checklist of items to take with you in advance and place them in an easy-to-carry location.

【If an earthquake strikes-Shisei Dayori.April (3)】

In the event of an earthquake, please take the following precautions to protect yourself.

〇If you are at home

Take actions to protect yourself, such as hiding under a table, as your first priority. When evacuating, turn off the main gas valve and wear shoes to prevent injury to your feet.

〇If you are on a street

, move away from block walls, vending machines, and other objects that are likely to fall over. Protect your head with a bag or similar item and evacuate to an open space or a nearby park.

〇If you are driving a car

Slow down slowly and stop on the left side of the road. Do not get out of the car until the tremors subside, and gather information.

〇If you are near the coast

evacuate to higher ground, listen carefully to tsunami information, and stay away from the coast until the tsunami advisory/warning is lifted. A split-second decision can mean the difference between life and death in the event of an earthquake, so act calmly and without panic.
