International
Volunteer Work Camp in ASO is a 3 day long work camp focused on two keywords in
the 21st century education: “international” and “volunteer”,
organized by high school students who perceive various issues occurring in the
world and around them as their own concerns. They gather to think about what
can be done and put in action in their everyday life.
The history
of the camp goes back as far as to the year of 2006, when the high school
students took initiative, voluntarily planned and executed the program with the
goal of fostering the “drive to live” among the young people. Nowadays, it has
become affectionately known by many as the “Volacamp” (borakyan).
The 19th
Volacamp is approaching and the members of executive committee (EC) began their
activities earlier this year. In preparation for the main event during the
summer vacation, we have been holding meetings and making arrangements. We look
forward to welcoming all interested high school and international students!

Messages from the subcommittees
There are 6
subcommittees tackling different problems you can choose from.
The members
of the organizational committee have chosen 6 topics to focus on within the
respective subcommittees and have prepared a welcoming message for each of
them.
Please read
the messages you can find below before you make your choice (you can pick 3
subcommittees and let us know which is your top priority).
◆Subcommittee
1: Education -(Guideposts) for a school that makes you happy-
In recent
years, the ability to learn proactively has been increasingly valued in Japan.
However, when comparing Japanese education to global standards, there are areas
where it lags behind. Everyone, let's take this opportunity to learn about
European education, which differs from Japan's, and together think about (guideposts)
for a school that makes you happy. We are planning mock experiences and
discussions on European education. Moreover, Japan is still trapped in focusing
on the academic background and stereotypes. Let's change such a society and
build a wonderful future together.
◆Subcommittee
2: Environment -In order to continue living on Earth-
Everyone
has likely heard about international and local environmental issues connected
to the climate change. However, have you ever deeply understood, thought about,
and taken action on these issues? Even if you feel that they are serious
problems, don’t you still somehow regard them as someone else's concern? Let's
learn, think, and act together on environmental issues so that they don’t feel
like distant concerns anymore!
◆Subcommittee
3: Healthcare -Let’s learn about global medical issues!-
Are you
aware of the current state of healthcare around the world? When you hear about
global "healthcare issues," it might seem like a difficult topic to
understand to many. There are regions where medical care is insufficient and
areas where healthcare systems have collapsed due to conflicts and wars. There
is a significant disparity compared to our own lives. This subcommittee aims to
learn about the global situation and think deeply on what we can do.
◆Subcommittee
4: Multicultural Coexistence -Listen, observe and think-
Recently,
there have been more opportunities to see and interact with foreigners in our
daily lives. They face challenges due to differences in language, culture,
customs, and discrimination. These issues require the Japanese side to
reconsider prejudices and preconceived notions. Therefore, in our subcommittee,
we will explore what can be done to achieve multicultural coexistence from four
perspectives: culture, education, history, and discrimination. Let’s engage in
activities that encourage each person to view these issues as their own concern
and develop their own perspectives.
◆Subcommittee
5: International Cooperation -Let’s expand the circle of mutual aid we create
together-
How many
people do you think are suffering from poverty around the world? In fact, it is
a serious issue not only in developing countries but also in Japan. Fair trade
is known as one way to address poverty by supporting producers in developing
countries. In this subcommittee, we will learn how to expand the circle of
mutual support created by producers and us, the consumers, through fair trade!
◆Subcommittee
6: Children’s Rights -Toward a future that doesn’t leave children behind-
In recent
years, there have been increasing instances where children's rights are not
respected, both domestically and internationally. Issues such as young carers,
child labor, and abuse are on the rise. How should we act to eliminate these
problems and create an environment where it’s a matter of course that the
children, who represent the future, are protected? In this subcommittee, we
will identify commonalities in such cases and contemplate what a society that
does not leave children behind should look like. Let’s translate what we learn
into action.
